What sets Eton apart is the breadth of opportunity on offer, not just to boys but to teachers too. There is a strong culture of enterprise here, with an open-minded approach to new ideas that can improve educational experiences. This includes our ‘Eton Connect’ initiative, where we work together with state schools across the UK for the benefit of children and teachers. Our staff spend 18,000 hours every year on partnership activities from school visits and workshops to summer schools.

First and foremost, a passion for young people and a love of seeing them flourish. Then a willingness to throw yourself into the full life of the school – academic, co-curricular and pastoral. Eton is a school with a huge community surrounding it, so the ability to connect with adults throughout that community is key, too.

Having a wide range of interests with which you can engage and inspire your pupils is also important. As is a willingness to connect with pupils on a one-to-one basis, developing meaningful and positive relationships with them which allow their talents to bloom. Finally, we’re excited about developing the use of technology in the classroom, so embracing this technologically fluid approach to teaching and learning is important.

Eton is a huge school - the largest full boarding school in the UK by some margin. This means there are a wide range of professional development opportunities whether they be on the academic side, in co-curricular activities such as sports or drama, or in the pastoral arena. Our size also means that a great deal of responsibility is devolved to middle managers. So there are real opportunities to gain responsibility early and work on whole school projects that impact a large number of boys and colleagues.

There’s a strong focus on your professional development. All teachers who join us benefit from a two-year Teaching and Learning induction programme. Year one includes whole-group sessions exploring fundamental teaching techniques, as well as one-to-one coaching and weekly supervision with a departmental mentor. In year two, you will have the opportunity to complete an educational research project through our Centre for Innovation and Research in Learning.
